In Their Own Story

The 1996 season marked a turning point. New head coach Tony Dungy and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin installed the Cover 2 defense that became known as the Tampa 2. Lynch began the season as a backup to Todd Scott, but when Scott tore his Achilles tendon on September 8, Lynch stepped in as the starting strong safety. He finished the season with 100 combined tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a sack in 16 games and 14 starts. On September 5, 1997, Lynch signed a four-year, $6.8 million contract extension. That same season, he received a $7,500 fine from the league for an illegal hit on Vikings wide receiver Chris Walsh, following a $5,000 fine earlier in the season. Lynch remained with the Buccaneers through the 2003 season, winning Super Bowl XXXVII with the team in the 2002 season.
