Background
Nightdive, which had acquired the rights to the series, announced the remake in 2015 and ran a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 that closed with more than $1.35 million from about 21,600 backers. Development lasted nearly eight years: the project moved from Unity to Unreal Engine 4, grew into an ambitious reboot and was put on hiatus in February 2018, then restarted with a new team as a faithful remake of what the Kickstarter had promised. The story, characters, weapons, levels and enemies follow the original, with some maps opened up and unnecessary mazes removed; Rebecca Lansing is now voiced by Rachel Messer.
Ports for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S followed on 21 May 2024 and for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in December 2025, while the Linux and macOS versions were cancelled in May 2024. Critics gave it generally favorable reviews, though some were divided on how faithfully it kept the original's mechanics.
