Quest for the Mighty Sword (also released as Ator III: The Hobgoblin and The Hobgoblin) is a 1990 Italian fantasy adventure film directed by Joe D'Amato. It serves as the third and final installment of the Ator film series.
The story begins when Thorn, King of the Gods, grants the Sword of the Sacred Graal to Ator, King of the Akili, to bring justice and guide his people back to the Middle World. When Thorn later demands the sword's return, Ator refuses, wanting to pass it to his young son, also named Ator. The immortal Dejanira arrives to plead for Ator's life, but Thorn kills him, splitting the sword in two. Thorn then traps Dejanira in a circle of fire, decreeing she will remain imprisoned until a human strong enough to free her arrives, at which point she will lose her immortality.
Ator's mother Sunn entrusts the sword fragments and her son to the ugly sorcerer gnome Grindel, asking for a death potion. Instead, Grindel gives her a love potion, sleeps with her, and curses her to eternal poverty and prostitution until a man embraces her as a mother.
Years later, as young Ator nears his eighteenth birthday, the soothsayer Nephele shows him a vision of Dejanira, with whom he falls in love, and reveals his destiny. Ator finds the sword fragments hidden in Grindel's cave, reforges them, and kills the gnome. Following Nephele's guidance, he travels to the Western Kingdom, where he defeats deadly robotic warrior twins and a fire-breathing dragon in a cave, then sacrifices the cave's treasure to the gods. In another cave, he finds and frees Dejanira, angering Thorn, who triggers a volcanic eruption and cave collapse.
In a tavern, Ator meets his mother without recognizing her and rescues her from an abusive client. When she recognizes him and embraces him, Grindel's curse lifts, causing her to instantly age and die in his arms. After cremating her body, Ator continues his quest for his people and the Middle World, traveling through the Eastern Kingdom, where he and Dejanira face the treachery of King Gunther and his sister Grimilde.
