Background

The album reached number four on the UK Albums Chart and number five on the US Billboard 200, selling over a million copies in the United States. A cover of the Coasters' "Young Blood" climbed to number 20. The record also produced rock radio staples such as "Silver, Blue & Gold," "Live for the Music," and the title track. Although never released as a single, "Silver, Blue & Gold" remains one of the band's most beloved songs. Cash Box described "Do Right by Your Woman" as an acoustic piece featuring twelve-string guitar work, excellent harmonies that sometimes evoke CSNY, and a low-down harmonica fill. Classic Rock History critic Janey Roberts called the title track Bad Company's finest song, arguing its energy defines the band and praising its great intros and pulsating verses that build into superman-style choruses. Classic Rock critic Malcolm Dome ranked it as the band's sixth best, highlighting its panache and subtlety. The album was remastered and reissued in 1994. The original vinyl release had a shiny silver cover, while CD editions use a plain light grey one. The initial album came as a gatefold with an interior photo of the band lounging on a couch near a television playing a Bugs Bunny cartoon. According to the booklet notes in the Deluxe 2CD Edition, the TV originally displayed a still from I Love Lucy, but permission for that image could not be secured, so it was swapped out.
