Gameplay

Gameplay is split between two sections. In one, the player controls FBI Agent Aaliyah Davis, interrogating Francis Zach Morgan in his apartment through visual novel dialogue and point-and-click exploration. In the other, the player guides a younger York through the open world of Le Carré, Louisiana, using a skateboard for traversal. York can shoot Louisiana wildlife with a gun, and the main story includes interstitial combat levels.

Plot

In 2019, FBI Agent Aaliyah Davis interrogates a sickly Francis Zach Morgan in his Boston apartment about his involvement in the murder of sixteen-year-old Lise Clarkson in Le Carré. Zach narrates how he and his alternate personality York investigated the case in 2005, linking it to a street drug called Saint Rouge. York discovers Lise was dismembered by her mother Galena in the presence of Professor R, whom he suspects of producing Saint Rouge. After battling a monstrous Galena in the Otherworld, he arrests her. Galena is later murdered, and York tracks Professor R, revealed to be a trans woman named Lena Dauman, an apostle for a fertility goddess. York learns Lena had an incestuous affair with her sister Candy, resulting in Patti. After battling a monstrous Lena, a bomb kills Lena and her father P.J. Clarkson. York finds Melvin corrupted by Saint Rouge, planning to sacrifice Patti; Melvin changes his mind and dies with Candy in a fire as Patti escapes with York.

Reception

Deadly Premonition 2 received mixed reviews. Some critics found it did not reach the heights of Deadly Premonition, with technical performance undermining the experience. Others considered it a serviceable sequel with an intriguing storyline and characters. The eccentric characters were praised, though some noted the smaller cast limited the narrative range. York was highlighted as a major strength. Technical performance was a major criticism, particularly the slow frame rate in the open world and the absence of a Y-axis camera invert option. Graphics were also panned. The game faced backlash for misgendering and deadnaming the trans character Lena Dauman, leading to a public apology by Swery and a patch that fixed the script.
