The path to this film was anything but straightforward. Plans for a Man of Steel sequel were already in motion by October 2014, with Henry Cavill expected to reprise the role. However, the troubled production of Justice League in 2017 derailed those ambitions, and by May 2020 the sequel had effectively stalled. The project found new life when James Gunn began developing a fresh Superman film around August 2022. His appointment as co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in October of that year gave the project institutional backing. Gunn was publicly confirmed as writer in December, and the working title Superman: Legacy was announced the following month. Direction was confirmed in March 2023, with David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan joining the cast in June. The subtitle was eventually dropped by late February 2024, when principal photography kicked off in Svalbard, Norway. The bulk of shooting took place at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional location work across Georgia and Ohio. Production wrapped in July.
