Cast
Tom Holland portrays Peter Parker / Spider-Man, a former Avenger whose existence has been forgotten by the world after a spell by Dr. Stephen Strange. Parker now dedicates himself to protecting New York City from street-level crime, and his superpowers evolve: his eyes turn fully black, his senses heighten, and he gains organic web-shooting from his wrists. Zendaya plays Michelle 'MJ' Jones-Watson, Parker's ex-girlfriend who now lives with Ned Leeds at MIT and has a new love interest. Sadie Sink appears as Jean Grey, a young mutant with psionic abilities who is searching for her sister Sara, taken by the Department of Damage Control. Director Destin Daniel Cretton described Jean as a lonely, angry teenager who does not see herself as a villain. Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle / Punisher, and Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner / Hulk.
Production
Sony Pictures initially stated in August 2019 that it would not produce further Spider-Man films with Marvel Studios, but a new agreement was reached in September 2019. Tom Holland said in December 2021 that he was unsure about continuing as Spider-Man, though producer Amy Pascal hoped to work with him on a new trilogy. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers returned as writers by February 2023, and Destin Daniel Cretton was hired to direct in October 2024. The title was announced in March 2025, derived from the 2008 comic book storyline 'Brand New Day'. Filming took place from August to December 2025 in Glasgow, Scotland, and throughout England, with soundstage work at Pinewood Studios.
Marketing
Destin Daniel Cretton discussed the film at Sony's CinemaCon panel in March 2025, where Tom Holland appeared via video to announce the title. Commentators noted the title's connection to the 'Brand New Day' comic storyline, which resets Spider-Man's status quo. On August 1, 2025, Sony released an eight-second teaser showing glimpses of a new Spider-Man costume with raised webbing and a larger spider logo. A 22-second teaser giving a full view of Holland in costume was released the next day. The costume was noted to be closer to the comics than previous suits, resembling those worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. A behind-the-scenes video recapping the first day of filming was released on August 10.
Reception
Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed $896 million in the United States and Canada and $1.442 billion in other territories, for a worldwide total of $2.338 billion. It became the highest-grossing film of 2026 and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. Its opening weekend of $932 million was the second-best ever, behind Avengers: Endgame. The film reached $1 billion in six days and $2 billion in 16 days, becoming the first Spider-Man film to do so. Pre-sales totaled $150 million, a record. The opening day gross of $169.8 million surpassed Endgame's record. The film remained number one at the box office for five consecutive weekends. It received largely positive reviews, with praise for Holland's performance, the action sequences, and the mature, character-driven story.
