Olimar
A tiny blue astronaut who lets his Pikmin do the heavy lifting.
Olimar is a small, blue, Hylt-species astronaut who serves as an Assist Trophy in the Super Smash Bros. series. He first stepped onto the Smash stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and has remained a fan-favourite summonable in Smash 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Rather than fighting with his own fists, Olimar channels his Pikmin — the tiny, plant-like creatures that are his most trusted companions — as a short-range projectile attack against whichever opponent is in his path.
Though he never receives a full fighter roster slot, Olimar's presence in Smash carries a lot of emotional weight for fans of the Pikmin series. He represents the quiet, methodical explorer at the heart of those games: a small alien who trusts a handful of colourful critters to help him haul cargo across a strange, overgrown world. In Smash, that trust translates into a single, satisfying burst of green, red, and yellow Pikmin flung across the stage.

Lore & Background
Olimar belongs to the Hylt, a small, blue-skinned species known for their spacefaring ambitions. In the Pikmin games, he is a lone astronaut who crash-lands on an uncharted planet dense with alien flora and fauna. Stranded far from any rescue, he discovers the Pikmin — small, brightly coloured creatures that resemble living plants with expressive faces. Rather than fighting the planet's dangers head-on, Olimar learns to build a working partnership with them, assigning red, yellow, blue, and other Pikmin to tasks like carrying cargo, clearing paths, and defending against the planet's native creatures.
His relationship with the Pikmin is defined by patience and mutual reliance. He speaks to them in a soft, melodic language, and they respond with chirps and little head-bobs. Over the course of each game, he gathers lost cargo, uncovers the planet's secrets, and slowly earns the trust of an ever-growing Pikmin colony. He is not a warrior; he is a coordinator, a caretaker, a leader who leads by example and gentle direction.
In the Smash Bros. crossover, Olimar's role is distilled to his most iconic action: summoning his Pikmin. The Assist Trophy captures the feeling of watching a small blue figure appear on the stage, crouch down, and hurl a burst of colourful Pikmin at a much larger opponent. It is a moment of quiet, underdog ingenuity in a universe of gods and titans.
Reader's Guide
Olimar appears exclusively as an Assist Trophy across Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Smash 4 (Wii U), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is not a playable fighter and has no neutral game, aerials, grabs, or special moves in the traditional sense. His entire contribution is a single, brief action.
When summoned (via the Assist Trophy item, the L button in multiplayer, or the Assist Trophy button in Ultimate), Olimar materialises at a fixed point on the stage. He crouches, gathers a small cluster of Pikmin, and hurls them in an arc toward the nearest opponent. The Pikmin act as a short-range projectile: they deal a modest amount of damage on contact, apply a small knockback, and then dissipate. The entire animation lasts roughly two to three seconds.
In Brawl, the Pikmin burst is a single volley. In Smash 4 and Ultimate, the animation is slightly refined with a brief wind-up and a more defined arc, but the core mechanic remains the same: one throw, one hit, done. There is no follow-up, no lingering Pikmin on the stage, and no way to interact with the thrown Pikmin after they are released.
Because the Assist Trophy spawns at a set location, positioning matters. A well-timed throw can catch an opponent off-guard during a recovery or a ledge grab, while a poorly placed one may simply bounce off the stage boundary. Olimar's low damage and knockback make him a utility and crowd-control option rather than a damage dealer, fitting his in-game identity as a coordinator rather than a combatant.
Alternate costumes are limited and vary by title; in Ultimate, a small selection of recoloured variants is available, shifting his suit tones slightly. There are no unique combo properties, recovery quirks, or interactive mechanics beyond the single throw.
Did You Know?
- Olimar's species, the Hylt, are depicted as small, blue, and somewhat pudgy — a deliberate contrast to the larger, more heroic fighters who share the Smash stage with him.
- Despite being one of the most recognisable characters in Nintendo's roster, Olimar has never been granted a full playable fighter slot in any mainline Smash Bros. title, remaining an Assist Trophy throughout.
