The stadium was built after HCA decided to construct its own ground due to limited authority at Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium. The proposal was submitted in 2003 to the government of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, headed by N. Chandrababu Naidu. Most funding came from an open auction of the stadium's title; Visaka Industries Limited won with a bid of ₹65,00,00,000, and the stadium was named 'Visakha International Cricket Stadium' in 2004. By 2005 it was ready to host its first ODI, but Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy changed the name to Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. HCA paid ₹43,00,00,000 to Visaka Industries following the renaming. The ends are named Pavilion End and North End; the North End was named after VVS Laxman upon his retirement.

The 2013 season marked the beginning at this venue. Kumar Sangakkara captained SRH for nine matches and Cameron White for the remaining seven, including the eliminator. The team retained 20 players from the Deccan Chargers and filled six slots with Thisara Perera, Darren Sammy, Sudeep Tyagi, Nathan McCullum, Quinton de Kock and Clint McKay.
