Reception

Ellen Gray of The Philadelphia Daily News compared the series in tone to Will & Grace and questioned whether a reality version of that show was necessary, but found the lack of manufactured drama a positive change from similar reality programs. Richard Huff of The New York Daily News, also referencing Will & Grace, called Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys "mind-breaking", stating it has moments but never enough to make it memorable or a winner; he noted that without reality-show trappings like table flipping and hair-extension pulling, the series needs humor, drama, and good storytelling, which he felt it lacks. Hank Stuever of The Washington Post cited a "curiously sad tone" pervading the show, adding that it often seems at cross-purposes, as if the producers had a clear idea of the peppy project they wanted but picked the wrong people to follow. Troy Patterson of Slate.com described the series as "intriguingly ridiculous", writing that it seeks to be serious but in doing so betrays its core triviality. Brent Hartinger of TheBacklot.com called it "a smart, watchable show", noting that after acknowledging the Will & Grace-like premise, the series quickly becomes about four very specific pairings, each interesting and unique, with none of the relationships perfect and only one fitting the typical expectation. Joel Derfner, a season one co-star, publicly criticized the producers for editing and manipulating statements and sentiments, sometimes airing the opposite of fact.
