Kyou Amasawa
She smiles, the room goes quiet, and you never wake up.
Kyou Amasawa is one of the renderings inhabiting the island of Aso in Ou Shibuya's Summer Time Rendering. To the untrained eye she is an unremarkable high school girl in a standard uniform, but beneath that human mask she is a parasitic supernatural entity whose sole purpose is to feed on the living. Renderings are ancient, amoral predators that mimic the people around them, and Kyou is among the most dangerous residents of the island.
Her role in the story is primarily that of a hostile force confronting the protagonist Shinobu Saitou. She operates with cold efficiency, using her signature ability to lull victims into an inescapable slumber before consuming them. Fans remember her as the embodiment of the island's quiet, suffocating dread — the friend who smiles while the world around you dims.

Lore & Background
The renderings of Aso are not ghosts, not demons in any religious sense, but something older and stranger: entities that have learned to wear human faces and human routines. They attend school, walk the same sandy roads, and sit in the same classrooms as the island's small population of children. Kyou Amasawa is one such entity. She moves through the island's daily life with the same casual normalcy as any teenager, and that normalcy is precisely what makes her terrifying. You cannot look at her and see a monster; you see a classmate, a neighbor, a girl with dark hair and a school blazer.
Her feeding method is deceptively gentle. Rather than tearing or chasing, Kyou simply makes her target fall asleep. The transition is seamless — a yawn, a heavy-lidded stare, a slow slide into a sleep so deep that no amount of shouting, shaking, or pain will rouse the victim. In that sleep the victim's life force is drained and consumed. The body is left behind, hollow and still, looking as though it is merely resting. To the island's small community, these disappearances are tragic but unexplained, and the renderings ensure no pattern is ever noticed.
Kyou's relationship to the island's history runs deep. The renderings are not newcomers; they have been cycling through Aso for generations, feeding and resetting. Their presence is woven into the island's mythology and the strange, recurring dreams that some residents report. Kyou is part of this ancient rhythm, and her interactions with Shinobu Saitou — a boy who has somehow broken the cycle by surviving a rendering's attack and returning to the island — shatter the quiet equilibrium she has maintained. What begins as a simple hunt becomes, for her, something more complicated, forcing a predator to confront a prey that refuses to stay asleep.
Reader's Guide
Ability: Sleep Induction (Kyou Amasawa)
Activation: Kyou initiates her ability through sustained visual contact or close proximity. No incantation, gesture, or physical touch is required. A few seconds of focused attention on a target is sufficient to begin the process. The victim experiences a gradual onset of drowsiness, as though they are simply tired, and transitions into a deep, unbroken sleep.
Range: Effective at short to medium range — roughly the span of a classroom or a small room. Kyou has been shown to use it across a seated distance in a school setting. It does not appear to function reliably at long range or through solid barriers.
Duration: The induced sleep is persistent. Once the victim enters the deep-sleep state, they cannot be roused by conventional means — shouting, physical contact, pain stimuli, or loud noise all fail. The sleep continues until the rendering completes its feeding or, in rare circumstances, is interrupted by another rendering's interference.
Known counters: The ability is not absolute. Shinobu Saitou, due to the unique condition of having previously survived a rendering's attack, demonstrates partial or full resistance to the sleep effect. Additionally, renderings appear to be able to affect or disrupt one another, suggesting an internal counter-mechanism within the group. The loop-reset mechanic of the island can also restore a victim to their pre-sleep state.
Loop-reset behaviour: When the island's time loop resets, any victim placed into sleep by Kyou is returned to their state before the sleep was induced. The rendering's progress — including partially drained life force — is undone. Kyou herself retains no memory of the previous loop, consistent with all characters on the island.
Wielder: Kyou Amasawa exclusively. No other rendering on Aso has been shown to replicate this specific sleep-induction effect.
Did You Know?
- Kyou's sleep ability is deliberately non-violent in its delivery — she never raises her voice or makes a sudden movement, which makes her attacks nearly impossible to distinguish from natural drowsiness.
- The renderings on Aso operate in a loose group, but each has a distinct and non-overlapping ability, suggesting they are not a hive mind but individual predators who simply coexist on the same island.
- Kyou's human disguise is so complete that island residents, including her classmates, interact with her as an ordinary student.
- The island's time-loop mechanic means Kyou, like every other character, has no memory of previous cycles, so her 'hunts' are experienced by her as first encounters each time.
