Background and release
After dropping the noise album Music to Scream To and the holiday EP A Very Poppy Christmas in late 2020, Poppy told Spin magazine that December she was busy with a fourth studio album and other ventures. On March 13, 2021, she used social media to announce a new song debut at the 63rd Grammy Awards. The next day, she performed "Eat" for the first time at the ceremony, though it wasn't released as a single then. About a month later, on April 6, word came that Poppy would introduce another new track at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver. At that event, she played a cover of Adam and the Ants' "Stand and Deliver" plus an original called "Say Cheese." By April 20, "Say Cheese" was named NXT's official theme. On June 8, Poppy returned to NXT and dropped the EP Eat (NXT Soundtrack) live, which included "Eat," "Say Cheese," and three fresh tracks. Additionally, "Dark Dark World" was revealed as the theme for In Your House.
