Before becoming Yubaba's apprentice, Haku existed solely as Nigihayami Kohakunushi, the divine guardian of a river. His physical existence ended when developers filled his bed with concrete to construct housing, leaving him homeless in the spirit world until he found sanctuary at the bathhouse. The dragon shape is his primordial truth; the boy form was merely a mask necessary for survival under Yubaba's control. While transformation can be triggered by trauma or the speaking of his true name, Haku also voluntarily shifts into his dragon form to traverse long distances and navigate the spirit realm with speed and agility. In this state, he transcends physical limits, moving through air and water alike to bridge the mortal and spirit realms.
