Soot sprites (susuwatari)

The small dust-like spirits of My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.

Soot sprites, or susuwatari, are small, dark, dust-like house spirits. In My Neighbor Totoro they live in the Kusakabes' new house and leave to find another empty house; in Spirited Away the boiler-man Kamaji commands soot sprites in the bathhouse boiler room.
