Japanese Yakuza

Shadows of honor and violence lurking within Japan's underworld.

The Japanese Yakuza appear in the 1974 film The Street Fighter as a criminal organization that employs violence and intimidation to achieve its goals. In the film, crime boss Renzo Mutaguchi leads a group of yakuza gangsters who attempt to hire martial artist Takuma Tsurugi to kidnap an oil heiress, Sarai. When Tsurugi refuses, the yakuza resolve to kill him and kidnap Sarai themselves. The yakuza are shown working alongside the Hong Kong mafia and Kowloon Triad boss Dinsau, demonstrating their reach beyond Japan. Their methods include torture, kidnapping, and murder, and they operate with a strict hierarchy, as seen when Dinsau kills a yakuza leader for shooting at Tsurugi during a duel.

Lore & Background

The yakuza in The Street Fighter are led by Renzo Mutaguchi, a crime boss who initially tries to hire Tsurugi for a kidnapping job. When Tsurugi refuses, Mutaguchi and his associates decide to kill him and proceed with the kidnapping themselves. The gangsters travel to Hong Kong to seek help from Kowloon Triad boss Dinsau, who agrees to assist them. Dinsau brings several fighters and recruits Tateki Shikenbaru, a condemned murderer Tsurugi had freed earlier, to avenge his siblings by killing Tsurugi. The yakuza successfully kidnap Sarai, but Tsurugi and his sidekick Rakuda rescue her. Tsurugi is captured and tortured by the gangsters, who demand to know Sarai's location. Rakuda, disobeying Tsurugi's orders, tells them where she is to save Tsurugi's life. Tsurugi later pursues the kidnappers to a shipyard, where he fights a blind samurai employed by Dinsau. Rakuda dies trying to help, and Tsurugi avenges him. The gangsters plan to force Sarai to sign over her oil company, but she refuses. Tsurugi boards an oil tanker where Sarai is held, fighting through numerous guards and yakuza leaders. Dinsau, who has come to respect Tsurugi, permits him to duel Shikenbaru, promising to surrender Sarai if Tsurugi wins. During the duel, a yakuza leader shoots at Tsurugi, and an outraged Dinsau kills him. Nachi sacrifices herself to give Shikenbaru a free shot, but Tsurugi survives and rips out Shikenbaru's vocal cords.

Reader's Guide

The yakuza in The Street Fighter operate primarily in Japan and Hong Kong, seeking territorial control and profit through kidnapping and extortion. Their structure follows a strict hierarchy, with leaders like Renzo Mutaguchi commanding loyalty from subordinates. They collaborate with international crime syndicates, such as the Hong Kong mafia and Kowloon Triad, to expand their reach. Their methods include torture, as seen when they torture Tsurugi to extract information, and violence, as when they attempt to kill Tsurugi multiple times. They are shown to be ruthless but also pragmatic, as Dinsau kills a yakuza leader for breaking the rules of a duel. The yakuza's primary goal in the film is to kidnap oil heiress Sarai and force her to sign over her company. They ultimately fail due to Tsurugi's intervention and Dinsau's respect for him.
