Luke (Street Fighter)

Luke Sullivan (ルーク・サリバン, Rūku Sariban) appears in Capcom's *Street Fighter* series, debuting as the final downloadable content for *Street Fighter V* in 2021. An orphan, Luke joined the military after his father Robert died in a terrorist attack. After years of training, he left the service to confront his trauma, and by *Street Fighter 6* he has become an older, more easygoing fighter and a teacher. He is voiced by Aleks Le in English and Tomoaki Maeno in Japanese.

Capcom created Luke as the intended protagonist for *Street Fighter 6*, conceived as a new type of hero following in the footsteps of lead character Ryu. Despite this intention, his *Street Fighter V* appearance was mostly met with negative reception for lacking the appeal of other fighters. His return in *Street Fighter 6* also received mixed responses, with critics and fans finding his energetic personality ill-suited to an adult character.

**Concept and creation** Director Takayuki Nakayama and combat director Ryuichi Shigeno originally designed Luke for *Street Fighter 6*, with a look similar to his final appearance but more youthful for his earlier inclusion in *Street Fighter V*. He was revealed in August 2021 as DLC. His design features a sleeveless blue jacket and blue pants, along with a yellow hood covering his chest and head. Alternative designs included a topless version and a white basketball jersey. Capcom stated Luke would be influential in future installments. His English voice actor Aleks Le recorded first, before Japanese voice actor Tomoaki Maeno, who enjoyed the fighting style and joining the *Street Fighter* community. Luke's name matches a character from the cancelled *Capcom Fighting All-Stars*, but Capcom confirmed they are not the same. His visual appearance, especially his arms, was inspired by Popeye the Sailor.

When Luke was revealed as the sole cover character for *Street Fighter 6* in December 2022, Aleks Le addressed negative fan reactions, lamenting poor treatment of Capcom's work. During recording, Le ad-libbed and changed one line with approval from voice director Jonathan Klein. In gameplay, Luke remains a mid-range fighter with few core changes, as Capcom had already planned his development for *Street Fighter 6*. His alternative outfit in *Street Fighter 6* is his original *Street Fighter V* look, emphasizing his youthful, aggressive personality.
