Kimberly Jackson

Kimberly Jackson appears in the *Street Fighter* series, debuting in *Street Fighter 6* as the franchise's first playable female African American character. Her creation involved consultation with Black employees and outside experts to portray Black people and culture authentically. She, Luke, and Jamie were intended to balance the established trio of Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li.

For her design, the team wanted a ninja but struggled to connect that archetype with her American background. They solved this by making her a student of Guy, a Japanese ninja from the *Final Fight* series living in the U.S. Her outfit emphasizes speed and movement to match her athleticism, and her hair and clothing were shaped to create a strong silhouette. She wears a scarf with traditional African patterns, which she uses during graffiti or when practicing Bushinryu, the fighting style Guy taught her. Her theme music was composed by Yoshiya Terayama.

Kimberly is an African American woman who graduated college early and sought out Guy to train as a ninja. In *Street Fighter 6*'s story, she searches for her uncle Albert, who worked for Ken Masters and disappeared after Ken was framed for a crime. She is voiced by Anairis Quiñones in English and Nao Tōyama in Japanese.

In gameplay, she is a "mix-up" character who chains high and low attacks, forcing opponents to guess how to block. She borrows moves from Guy, using slides and forward thrusts to close distance. Instead of smoke bombs, she uses spray paint to obscure her position, which also acts as an explosive and lets her instantly teleport to another spot. She has other explosives to distract foes. Her super attacks—"Bushin Beats," "Bushin Ninjastar Cypher," and "Bushin Scramble"—deliver rapid blows, with the last aimed at airborne opponents.

A comic starring Kimberly, *Street Fighter Masters: Kimberly* by Udon Entertainment, was scheduled for release in December 2023.

Kimberly was announced alongside Juri for *Street Fighter 6*. Brand manager Jackie Simmons worried Juri might overshadow her but was relieved Kimberly generated similar excitement. A Good Smile Pop Up Parade figure of her was included in the deluxe edition of the game, alongside one of Luke. For the series' 35th anniversary, U-Treasure produced candles based on *Street Fighter 6* characters, including Kimberly.

Upon her reveal, media praised her. Fanbyte's Imran Khan called her a "positive and undeniably cool portrayal of a subset of black culture," rare in fighting games, and credited the involvement of Black consultants. IGN's Michael Saltzman saw her as a standout in the cast. The Mary Sue's Briana Lawrence, initially planning to play other characters, was won over by Kimberly's hair and spray can gimmick. Kinda Funny's Blessing Adeoye Jr. praised her "huge braids" as a favorite depiction of Black hair in games.

Game Rant's Smangaliso Simelane said her design and moves embody *Street Fighter 6*'s hip-hop inspirations. Destructoid's Chris Moyse called her design "vivid and dazzling" and felt she represented the game best at her reveal. VG247's Alex Donaldson described her as a "joy" and a great addition, highlighting her as a student of a veteran fighter. Rolling Stone's Christopher Cruz noted her theme blends chiptune and hip-hop, evoking a retro 90s aesthetic. GamesRadar+'s Andi Hamilton found her the most fun character.
