Ibuki (Street Fighter)
A young ninja balancing clan duties with teenage life.
Ibuki is a character from Capcom's *Street Fighter* series, debuting in the 1997 fighting game *Street Fighter III: New Generation*. She is a young ninja whose clan sends her to recover a secret scroll linked to the G-Hawk organization. Her storylines frequently focus on her struggle to reconcile her ninja training with a normal teenage life, including her desire to attend university and find a boyfriend.
During development of *Street Fighter III: New Generation*, the team had already included legacy character Ryu and wanted a female fighter, but struggled to find a suitable concept. Character designer Akira "Akiman" Yasuda proposed making her a ninja, arguing that ninjas are inherently cool. Producer Tomoshi Sadamoto noted that because the team was based in Japan, finding reference material for Ibuki was easier than for other new characters. Yasuda incorporated elements of koppojutsu, a martial art gaining attention at the time, along with ninjutsu into her design and moves. Her first design was a short-haired, muscular girl with glasses, wearing an outfit similar to Guy from *Final Fight*, but the team felt it looked more like a martial artist than a ninja. A second pass focused on a more traditional ninja, giving her a full bodysuit with armor on her hands, ankles, and crotch. Further refinements produced a look Yasuda described as cute "even though she looks shabby." Artist Kinu Nishimura emphasized that cuteness in her illustrations and also designed a school outfit for Ibuki. Her long ponytail caused problems for the animation team, increasing her character data by 1.2 to 1.3 times that of other fighters, requiring several months to complete, with Sadamoto himself helping at the end.
Ibuki returns in later *Street Fighter III* games, where her storyline continues to explore her wish to balance her ninja duties with everyday life. She also appears in *Street Fighter IV*, set before *Street Fighter III*, with a similar character focus. In *Street Fighter V*, she appears as a downloadable character, featuring in her own story and the cinematic mode *A Shadow Falls*, where she works with Karin and R. Mika against Shadaloo. Outside the main series, a super-deformed version appears in *Pocket Fighter* (1997).

Lore & Background
Ibuki was conceived during development of Street Fighter III: New Generation when the team wanted a female character. Akira 'Akiman' Yasuda suggested a ninja, and producer Tomoshi Sadamoto noted that being located in Japan made reference materials easier to find. Yasuda incorporated elements of koppojutsu and ninjitsu into her design and movements. Her initial design was a short-haired muscular girl with glasses, but this was rejected as looking 'more like a martial artist than a high-flying ninja.' A later design gave her a full bodysuit and armor, refined further into a look Yasuda described as cute 'even though she looks shabby.' Artist Kinu Nishimura emphasized that cute aspect and designed a school outfit for her. Her long ponytail caused animation difficulties, requiring 1.2 to 1.3 times the character data of other fighters and several months to complete.
Reader's Guide
Ibuki appears in the Street Fighter III series, Street Fighter IV, and as a downloadable character in Street Fighter V, where she works alongside Karin and R. Mika against Shadaloo. Outside the main series, she appears in Pocket Fighter, Street Fighter X Tekken (partnered with Rolento), and various mobile and card-based games, as well as a cameo in Capcom Fighting Evolution. She also appears in comic books including Street Fighter: Unlimited and the miniseries Street Fighter Legends: Ibuki. Merchandise includes t-shirts, phone cards, a wall clock, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network avatars, and a Kotobukiya figure. Reception has been positive, with Computer and Video Games magazine describing her as the most popular and powerful character of New Generation's cast. Some publications saw her as a replacement for Chun-Li, causing her to be despised in the first two Street Fighter III titles. Critics praised her design and personality, though some criticized the emphasis on her meeting boys as perpetuating a 'normal girl' trope.
