Lore & Background
Dan Hibiki was trained by his father, Go Hibiki, and later briefly by Gouken's master, but Gouken himself never trained Dan. Dan's goal is to defeat Sagat, who killed his father, Go, in a brutal fight. However, Sagat lost his right eye to Ryu in the first Street Fighter tournament, not to Go. Dan's dojo was established before his fight with Sagat in Street Fighter Alpha, and Sagat's fake defeat occurs during that fight, not in Alpha 3. In Street Fighter Alpha 3, Dan has not succeeded in his quest; he continues to seek revenge. Dan is not revealed to be one of Blanka's friends in that game. In Street Fighter V, Dan appears as a playable character, not as a shopkeeper providing item descriptions. He may have won a world martial arts tournament off-screen but remains dissatisfied with lacking students. Inspired by Blanka's 'Blanka-chan' dolls, Dan creates his own 'Saikyo-boy' dolls.
Reader's Guide
Dan Hibiki's significance lies in his role as a deliberate parody of SNK's Art of Fighting characters, created by Capcom in humorous retaliation after SNK's Ryo Sakazaki bore resemblance to Ryu. His existence was foreshadowed in promotional artwork of Street Fighter II, but he was properly introduced in the Alpha trilogy. Dan is consistently depicted as a weak character, emphasized in games like Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, where he drops only red counter gems, making him easy to beat. Despite his weakness, he has become a fan favorite for his humorous design and mannerisms. Players often aim to become expert at using him, though the idea of a weak character also received negative response. Dan appears in multiple Capcom crossovers, including Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and in crossovers with SNK. His legacy includes appearances in manga and an upcoming film, where his casting has been criticized as whitewashing. Executive producer Yoshinori Ono emphasized Dan as a character he strongly wanted in Street Fighter IV, noting that while Dan is labeled a joke character, he is a very technical fighting game character that brings something unique.
