Stray Kids released their first extended play (EP) Mixtape in 2017, which debuted at number two on the Gaon Album Chart and Billboard World Albums chart. They officially debuted in 2018 with the EP I Am Not, followed by I Am Who and I Am You. In 2019, they released the Clé series EPs: Clé 1: Miroh, Clé 2: Yellow Wood, and Clé: Levanter. The group earned their first South Korean music program win with the lead single 'Miroh' from Clé 1: Miroh.

The group debuted in Japan with a compilation album SKZ2020, which debuted at number three on both the Oricon Albums Chart and Billboard Japan Hot Albums. Their first Japanese single 'Top' debuted at number one on the Oricon Singles Chart, making Stray Kids the fourth foreign male artists to achieve this with their first single. Their first Japanese EP All In debuted at number two on the Oricon Albums Chart and Billboard Japan Hot Albums.

Stray Kids' first studio album Go Live debuted at number one on the weekly Gaon Album Chart and was certified platinum by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA) in August 2020. Their second studio album Noeasy became their first million-selling album in August 2021, making them the first JYP Entertainment artist to sell over one million copies of an album. In February 2022, they signed to Republic Records for US promotions. Subsequent releases—Oddinary, Maxident, 5-Star, Rock-Star, Ate, Hop, Karma, Do It, and This & That—all peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200, making them the first act to debut at the top with their first nine charting releases.
