Rintaro Okabe

The mad scientist who defies fate to save her world.

Rintaro Okabe is the protagonist of Steins;Gate, an 18-year-old first-year student at Tokyo Denki University and the founder of the "Future Gadget Laboratory" in Akihabara, where he spends most of his time. He is an eccentric individual who calls himself a mad scientist and often goes by the pseudonym Kyouma Hououin. Okabe gives off the appearance of being delusional and paranoid, frequently referring to the "Organization" that is after him, talking to himself on his phone, and engaging in fits of maniacal laughter.

He is frequently mocked for this behavior, mostly by Kurisu and Itaru, and referred to as a chunibyou. As the story progresses, he mellows out and shows that deep down he is a kind-hearted and loyal friend, only playing up the Hououin Kyouma personality as both a form of entertainment and a way to guise his insecurities. As he experiments with time travel, he learns that he is the only one who possesses the ability to determine changes between different timelines, which he dubs "Reading Steiner"; the reasoning behind this is never explained in-universe, although it is implied that a fever he had as a child during the Y2K crisis had something to do with it.

Lore & Background

Okabe's character arc is defined by the tension between his delusional persona and the harsh reality of time travel. He adopts the identity of Hououin Kyouma as a shield against vulnerability, using dramatic speech patterns to command attention. However, when he inadvertently sends messages to the past, this facade cracks under the pressure of changing history. The invention of the Phone Microwave allows him to send D-mails, which alter the world line and trigger catastrophic consequences for those close to him.

Throughout his journey, Okabe witnesses repeated deaths of Mayuri Shiina across different timelines. This cycle forces him to confront the limitations of human agency against a universe that resists change. Ultimately, Okabe's resolve hardens as he accepts the burden of being the sole bearer of memories from erased worlds. His goal shifts from personal glory to ensuring a future where his friends can live without fear.

The Steins;Gate world line represents the culmination of this struggle, achieved through immense sacrifice and unwavering determination.

Reader's Guide

Rintaro Okabe begins as a self-proclaimed mad scientist hiding behind a persona of bravado to mask deep insecurity. His journey transforms him from an observer of fate into its active challenger through repeated time travel attempts. Across countless world lines, his core motivation remains saving Mayuri Shiina and Kurisu Makise. This drive forces him to confront the Organization alone, bearing the mental scars of memories that no one else shares.

He evolves from a boy playing at being a hero into a man willing to sacrifice his own happiness for the sake of others. Despite changing timelines, Okabe retains his eccentric speech patterns and loyalty to friends. However, the weight of Divergence Meter readings hardens him. By reaching the Steins;Gate line, he balances his delusions with reality, accepting that true strength lies in enduring pain rather than escaping it through fantasy. His legacy is defined by resilience against impossible odds.
