Premise

The central protagonist is Martha Mitchell, known as 'The Mouth from the South' for her frequent press comments that often embarrassed her husband John, who begins the series as Nixon's Attorney General. Aware that her behavior makes her unpopular with both the government and her husband, she eventually exposes Nixon's knowledge of his staffer's activities. Other perspectives include G. Gordon Liddy, the burglary's coordinator who leads a group of ex-FBI agents and Cuban exiles and is depicted as a Nazi sympathizer who proposes infiltrating the Democratic Party. His personal life is complicated by his engagement to a woman described as a 'leftie'. The series refocuses the events of 1972–1975 away from powerful white men onto white wives, a black security guard, and Italian and Hispanic FBI field agents.

Production

Gaslit is based on the first season of the Slate podcast Slow Burn and was produced by Universal Content Productions. Announced in February 2020, the series initially had Sam Esmail as executive producer and Julia Roberts, Sean Penn, Armie Hammer, and Joel Edgerton attached to star, with Edgerton set to direct alongside his brother Nash Edgerton. Hammer exited in January 2021 due to scheduling conflicts. In February, Starz picked up the series, and both Edgerton brothers left, with Matt Ross joining as director. Dan Stevens replaced Hammer in April, and Betty Gilpin, Darby Camp, and Shea Whigham joined in May, with Whigham replacing Edgerton. Filming began that month in Los Angeles. Additional cast members were added in July and October. Penn refused to return until all cast and crew were vaccinated against COVID-19; a compromise in September allowed him to film his scenes in two weeks with a vaccinated crew. The premiere date was set for April 24, 2022.
