In the Stargate fictional universe, an Ascension Device is a piece of Ancient technology designed to facilitate the elevation of a mortal consciousness to a higher plane of existence. While ascension is primarily a spiritual and evolutionary process achieved by the Ancients through their own power, specific technological interfaces or chambers were created to assist mortals in bridging the gap between physical reality and the realm of non-physical beings. These artifacts represent some of the most powerful and restricted knowledge left behind by the Alterans.

The Ancients are a race that built the Stargate network and that they eventually ascended to a higher plane of existence. It is revealed that the pre-ascended Ancient known as Amelius originated the concept of the Stargate and wormhole travel. Daniel Jackson discovered that the Earth myth of Atlantis is founded on the Lost City of the Ancients, and that the city was found in the Pegasus Galaxy.
