Neoferdina cumingi, called Cuming's sea star, belongs to the starfish family Goniasteridae. It lives on shallow-water reefs across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean through northwestern and northeastern Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and out to the Central Pacific.

This starfish comes in many color forms but tends to blend into its surroundings. Its pattern is typically symmetrical, with distinctive spots: some run along the margin of the body, while others form rows down each of the five arms.
