Kanakaster longibrachium is a sea star from the family Goniasteridae, living off the coast of New Caledonia. Its name comes from Latin, combining *longus* and *brachium* to mean "long arm." It belongs to the genus *Kanakaster* because its body is covered by a granulated dermis and it has a single row of two furrow spines per plate, without subambulacral spines—traits of the subfamily Ferdininae. What sets it apart from other *Kanakaster* species are its elongated arms and many abutted superomarginal plates along the arm. It has 17 to 18 marginal plates per interradius, similar to *K. convexus*, *K. solidus*, and the Philippine *K. balutensis*, but none of those share its high number of abutted superomarginal plates or its long arm shape. The body is star-shaped with triangular, elongate arms and curved interradial arcs. A dermis weakly hides the plate boundaries on the upper surface. Along the arm, 6 to 7 pairs of superomarginal plates are fully abutted, with 1 or 2 more partially so. These superomarginals and inferomarginals create a wide dorsal periphery that makes up 28% of the disk radius. The superomarginal plates have a rough texture but no surface accessories. The actinal intermediate area has two series, one tapering off at the arm base. The actinal and adambulacral plates are covered by a dense granular layer. Each plate has two blunt-tipped, quadrate to rectangular furrow spines, larger near the center and arranged in a row. No subambulacral spines or other adambulacral accessories are present. The disk is sharply darker than the central primary circlet and the light-to-white superomarginal plates. This species is found off New Caledonia at depths between 310 and 380 meters.
