Euretaster insignis

Euretaster insignis, called the striking sea star, is a starfish from the family Pterasteridae that lives in the central western Pacific Ocean. It is one of just three species in the order Velatida found in shallow tropical waters. Its young develop inside a cavity beneath a membrane on the animal’s upper side.

The species was first described in 1882 by Percy Sladen as *Retaster insignis*, placing it in a small genus separate from *Pteraster*. In 1940, Walter Kenrick Fisher realized that the type species he had assigned to *Retaster*—*Pteraster capensis*—was actually a valid *Pteraster* species, making the genus *Retaster* a synonym of *Pteraster*. He gave the former group a new name, *Euretaster*, with *R. insignis* as its type species.

The order Velatida is thought to be the earliest living lineage of starfish to split from the ancestral line, with their closest relatives being the deep-sea sea daisies of the order Peripodida. The three *Euretaster* species are the only tropical, shallow-water members of Velatida; the rest live at abyssal depths. While this might suggest a deep-water origin for the order, many shallow-water velatidan fossils exist from the Cretaceous period, indicating that these ancient forms were largely pushed out of shallow habitats by competition from more recent, advanced groups.

This small starfish has five short arms and a star-shaped body. Its upper surface looks inflated because it is covered by a supradorsal membrane, which is held up by bundles of tiny spines on flat plates arranged in a mosaic pattern beneath the skin. The membrane encloses a cavity filled with seawater, connected to the outside by a central opening (the osculum) that opens and closes periodically. The membrane has a net-like pattern of ridges and small conical bumps, and is colored in some combination of red, white, and brown.

*Euretaster insignis* lives in the tropical western central Pacific, from the intertidal zone down to about 132 meters (430 feet). It is found on coral reefs, rocky shores, and sandy or muddy rubble.

The sexes are separate. Instead of releasing planktonic larvae, the female broods the developing embryos in the supradorsal cavity.
