Culcita schmideliana, called the spiny cushion star, is a type of pin-cushion star. Its base color varies widely, often with patches of a different hue. The star is pentagonal in shape and inhabits the tropical Indo-Pacific. Hobby aquarists seldom keep this species.
This starfish has a leathery, inflated look and is roughly pentagonal. Fully grown adults are subglobose, with a very convex upper surface and a flat underside. The upper side is dotted with small conical spines, which reportedly never enter the papular zones. The underside has fine granulations and is covered with large conical tubercles; those nearest the ambulacral grooves and the margin are oval in cross-section and the largest. Coloration varies, but a greyish background with small pink patches next to black tubercles is common. The madreporite is often orange. Several commensal animals live in its body cavity or on its surface. A carapid fish typically resides in its stomach, and the polychaete worm *Gastrolepidia clavigera* sometimes crawls over its surface. The tiny commensal shrimp *Periclimenes soror* often hides almost invisibly on the upper surface.
The spiny cushion star is native to the tropical western Indo-Pacific, from Madagascar, the East African coast, and the Red Sea to Aldabra, Chagos, the Philippines, the Seychelles, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Australia. It lives in lagoon areas and on inner reef flats among seagrasses and algae, at depths down to about 92 meters.
Its diet consists mainly of the epibenthic film of organic detritus and microorganisms growing on algae and seagrasses. It also browses on the sponge *Gellius cymiformis* (often associated with the symbiotic alga *Ceratodictyon spongiosum*), as well as the living tissues and polyps of the stony corals *Galaxea* and *Goniopora* and the soft coral *Xenia*. In this coral-grazing behavior, it resembles the better-known cushion star *Culcita novaeguineae*.
