A Force-sensitive bloodline central to the Skywalker saga.
Last updated
The Skywalker family is a fictional human family in the Star Wars franchise, presented as a bloodline with strong inherent capabilities related to the Force. Luke Skywalker, his twin sister Princess Leia Organa, and their father Darth Vader are central characters in the original film trilogy, while Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala lead the prequel trilogy. The bloodline is one of the two strongest with the Force, alongside the Palpatine bloodline.
History
The Skywalkers first appeared in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, where Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn discovered Shmi Skywalker and her son Anakin as slaves on Tatooine. Shmi told Qui-Gon that Anakin had no father, leading Qui-Gon to suggest Anakin was a product of midi-chlorians. Anakin left Tatooine to begin Jedi training. In Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Shmi had married Cliegg Lars and become stepmother to Owen; she later died after being kidnapped by Tusken Raiders.
Anakin secretly married Padmé Amidala at the film's end. In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Padmé died giving birth to twins Luke and Leia. Luke was raised by Beru and Owen Lars on Tatooine, while Leia was raised by Senator Bail Organa and Queen Breha Organa on Alderaan. Anakin, now Darth Vader, was unaware of his children.
The twins joined the Rebel Alliance after their adoptive families died at the hands of the Empire, and they did not learn of their relation until the events of Return of the Jedi. The Solo family is part of the Skywalker family. In Solo: A Star Wars Story, orphan Han Solo stole to survive on Corellia; the surname Solo was given by an Imperial officer. Han later formed a romantic relationship with Leia.
Together with Luke and a reformed Anakin, they ended the Empire's reign, though Anakin died. In The Force Awakens, Han and Leia's son Ben had become Kylo Ren, causing the family to break apart; Luke was not revealed to have children.
Legends
In the non-canonical Legends brand, following the original film trilogy, Leia and Han marry and have children, and Luke marries several years after they do. The Skywalker bloodline branches from Luke and Leia's descendants, but only Luke's side carries the Skywalker name. Leia and Han marry in The Courtship of Princess Leia. Leia is pregnant with twins in Heir to the Empire, and they are born in The Last Command.
Han and Leia have another child by the time of the Jedi Academy trilogy, by which time Leia has become Chief of State of the New Republic. All three Solo children become Jedi Knights under Luke's tutelage. Luke refounds the Jedi Order and trains several new Jedi including Leia; he eventually marries Mara Jade, and they have a son named Ben. Mara Jade was created by Timothy Zahn as an antagonist for Heir to the Empire, and she and Luke marry in the comic miniseries Union.
Their son Ben Skywalker is born in the middle of the New Jedi Order series. Jaina Solo, the eldest child of Han and Leia, was created by Timothy Zahn for the Thrawn trilogy; she and her twin brother Jacen are born in The Last Command.
