Bref. (stylized with a period; English: In short.) is a French television series created by Kyan Khojandi, cowritten with Bruno Muschio, and produced by Harry Tordjman for My Box Productions. The first episode was released on Canal+ on 29 August 2011 and the show ended on 12 July 2012. After a 14-year break, Disney+ announced the return of the series with a second season in February 2025, and the 6 episodes were released on 14 February on the Star hub.
Plot
The show follows an unnamed 30-year-old man living in Paris, who is single and out of work. His birthday, turning 30, happens in the 46th episode. The audience never learns his name; he is simply called "I." His existence feels dull until he meets a woman at a party and falls for her. From that moment on, his only goal is to see her again, and much of the series focuses on his clumsy, unsuccessful efforts to connect with her.
He occasionally looks for employment, eventually landing a one-on-one interview at a company that sells copying machines. The interview goes terribly, with the boss seeing through every false claim on his resume, yet he still gets the job. However, he quickly grows fed up with his coworkers and the monotony, so he quits. After that, he takes a job at a call center called Telecom 3000.
He frequently attends parties hoping to meet women, leading to a string of one-night stands. He also has a brief sexual encounter with his ex-girlfriend and later with a girl who rejected him when he was a teenager. Meanwhile, he regularly hooks up with a woman named Marla, who is his friend with benefits.
Season 1
To improve his chances with women, he picks up the guitar. What starts as a pickup tactic turns into a genuine hobby, and he eventually performs a concert under the stage name "Amer de toi," which means "Bitter about you." The hero shares an incredibly close bond with his brother, Keyvan. They can understand each other with just a look, barely needing words to communicate. "I" often calls Keyvan for advice or reassurance. Their parents divorce after their father cheats with a student.
When that student doesn't return his love, the father ends up alone and moves into his son's apartment, much to the narrator's annoyance. Eventually, the father gets his own place in the same building. Keyvan plans to move in with his true love, which would let "I" take over Keyvan's flat after a disastrous roommate situation with Baptiste, who never cleans or does chores. But things don't work out: Keyvan's girlfriend breaks up with him, so the hero is stuck living with his father again, since Baptiste has already found a new roommate.
