Tegumi

Okinawan wrestling that may have given rise to karate.

Tegumi, also called Mutō, is a traditional form of wrestling from Okinawa. It is believed to have evolved from an indigenous grappling self-defense and, after absorbing striking and kicking techniques from China, may have become the foundation of Te, which underlies modern karate. The practice remained a popular cultural recreation until the Taishō period.
