Nippers
Young surf lifesavers learning beach safety and competition.
Nippers are young surf lifesavers, typically aged 5 to 14, in clubs across Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Unlike senior lifesavers, most do not patrol beaches; the emphasis is on fun and surf awareness. They learn beach safety, including dangers like rip currents and blue-ringed octopuses, and older Nippers may learn basic first aid and CPR from age 13. At 13, they can earn a Surf Rescue Certificate to patrol and compete in senior events.
