Racing career
Brookes began racing in karting and became Senior British Champion in 1990. In 1996 he entered the British Touring Car Championship driving an ex-works Toyota Carina, winning the Total Cup For Privateers with TOM'S Team Brookes, run by his father Jon. He had limited works backing from Toyota. For 1997 he switched to a Peugeot 406 previously used by the works team, but the car suffered reliability problems.
He finished second in the independents cup, narrowly losing to Robb Gravett. The following year Brookes Motorsport entered one Honda Accord for Gravett, while Brookes raced only two rounds at Oulton Park. The pair also entered the Bathurst 1000. Brookes drove the Honda Accord part-time in 1999, finishing fourth in the independents cup.
He appeared on the entry list for the 2000 BTCC season but did not race. Brookes Motorsport later reformed as TCR, which continues to run on the TOCA support package.
