Test Match (board game)

Two cricket board games, one a game of chance, the other three-dimensional.

Test Match refers to two cricket-themed board games, both distinct from the cricket variation of the table-top football game Subbuteo. The name covers a 1955 game of chance and a later three-dimensional version that became the publisher's most popular title.

John Waddington version

The first version was published in 1955 by John Waddington Limited in the United Kingdom and John Sands Pty. Ltd. in Australia. Players pulled cardboard tabs to randomly generate a delivery, then the batting opponent did the same on the other end of the board. The game depended entirely on chance, similar in principle to pencil cricket.

Crown and Andrews version

A three-dimensional version was released by Crown and Andrews in 1977, originally made by Peter Pan. Unpainted figurines allowed players to paint caps or shirts in favourite colours. One player rolled a ball-bearing down a plastic chute attached to a plastic bowler; another operated the batter. Fielders caught the ball by stopping it between their feet. In 2010 Crown and Andrews introduced Test Match Ashes Edition with rules for limited overs and Twenty20, featuring over arm bowling with controllable speed, a bouncing ball, a trigger-action batsman, and magnetised fielders. Test Match is Crown and Andrews' most popular game.
