Tennis at the Summer Olympics has a long and interrupted history. It began at the 1896 Games but was dropped after 1924 due to disputes over amateurism. It returned as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984, then as a full medal sport in 1988, open to all players. Since then, it has been held at every Summer Olympics. The playing surface has varied: hard court for most Games since 1984, except for clay in 1992 and 2024, and grass in 2012. The 1908 and 1920 Games were also on grass. Indoor tennis on wood occurred only in 1908 and 1912. The event has been held at Grand Slam venues three times: Wimbledon in 1908 and 2012, and Roland Garros in 2024. Notable medal records include Serena and Venus Williams each winning four gold medals, and Andy Murray being the only player to win two singles gold medals. Steffi Graf is the only player to achieve a single-year Golden Slam (1988). The bronze medal format has varied: semifinal losers shared bronze in 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988, and 1992; a playoff match was staged in all other years. Since 2021, the deciding set uses a 7-point tiebreaker at 6-all.
