Softball was finally added to the 1996 Olympic program in 1995, with Anita DeFrantz instrumental in its inclusion. On 8 July 2005, the IOC voted to drop softball for 2012, a decision reaffirmed on 9 February 2006. The vote to keep it required a simple majority but ended 52–52 with one abstention. In October 2009, it was officially excluded from the 2016 Games. On 3 August 2016, the IOC voted to include softball for the 2020 Olympics, but it was not included for 2024; it is expected for 2028 Los Angeles.
