History
Before the end of the 2011–12 season, seven Primeira Liga clubs expressed interest in creating a B team to fill six vacant places in the Segunda Liga for 2012–13. The six selected clubs, based on their 2011–12 Primeira Liga ranking, were Benfica, Porto, Sporting CP, Braga, Marítimo and Vitória de Guimarães. The LPFP required a €50,000 fee and that each B team maintain a squad of at least ten players developed at the club's academy. Additionally, B teams could not compete in cup competitions or gain promotion, and each could have up to three players over 23 years old. In late May 2012, it was officially announced that these six B teams would join the Segunda Liga, expanding the league from 16 to 22 teams and increasing the season from 30 to 42 games.
