S.C. Angrense

History

The club's origins trace to the early 20th century, when football was first played in Terceira with a ball from England, on the fields of Relvão near the Bay of Angra and the walls of the Fort of São João Baptista. Early teams were informal but eventually coalesced into the Associação de Foot-Ball de Angra do Heroísmo, created on 4 August 1921. The União Desportiva dos Empregados do Comércio, one of the oldest football clubs on the island, formed the nucleus of what would become Sport Club Angrense; it initially accepted only commerce workers but later admitted players other teams had difficulty recruiting. Growing interest led to the Campo de Jogos de Angra do Heroísmo, inaugurated on 24 June 1924. Disagreements caused the Commercial Workers Union to dissolve, spawning Club Desportivo Angrense (known locally as Os Caveiras) and Sporting Club da Terceira. For years the latter focused on physical education, based in the old Convent of Graca in Alto das Covas. On 22 November 1929, members of the Terceira Sporting Club initiated a merger that formed Sport Club Angrense. The club was officially organized on 1 December 1929 and approved by the Governor of the Autonomous District of Angra do Heroísmo on 16 January 1942. A letter from the Administrative Council, signed by President Lieutenant Gil Gonçalves and dated 2 December 1929, announced the creation in the weekly A Pátria on 14 December 1929.
