History

The club was founded on 6 January 1923 by ten founding partners. Its creation followed three football games in the summer of 1922 between Fayal Sport and Casa Pia Atlético Clube, which spurred interest in a new team. A dissidence against Fayal Sport also drove the initiative. The idea to form a club in the populous parish of Angústias gained momentum, and a maneuver involving a dedicated Fayal Sport partner who broke away helped establish Angústias AC. That partner, Manuel Stattmiler Saldanha e Albuquerque, chaired the first board in 1923 but soon returned to Fayal Sport. The club's first president, Jaime Maria Soares de Melo, was not part of that maneuver; he was a professor, municipal president, and council administrator, and is considered the Father of Atlético. During his term the club's anthem was established, the team became a public institution, and an education and sport program was founded two years after the club's founding. Over the following 81 years the group became an important part of the island's sporting culture.
