Peni Parker
Japanese American teen pilot of the SP//dr mech suit.
Peni Parker is a superhero from Marvel Comics, created by writer-musician Gerard Way and artist Jake Wyatt. She debuted in the 2014 series *Edge of Spider-Verse*. Hailing from an alternate universe, Peni is a Japanese American high school student and a second-generation spider-hero. She shares a psychic link with a radioactive spider named SP//dr, and together they pilot a mech suit also called SP//dr—a role she took over after her father died. The character draws heavy inspiration from the 1995 anime *Neon Genesis Evangelion*. After finishing his debut solo album *Hesitant Alien* and while his band My Chemical Romance was on hiatus, Gerard Way was contacted by Marvel editor Nick Lowe about creating a custom Spider-Man for the upcoming *Spider-Verse* series. Lowe, a fan of Way’s earlier comics, had previously approached them about an X-Men annual that never happened. Way liked the idea of working without being tied to existing continuity, so they agreed and teamed up with artist Jake Wyatt. Way explained that they “took the basic concepts of Spider-Man and looked deeper,” asking what if the radioactive spider wasn’t just a bite but a psychic link that stayed part of the story. This led to a girl who loses her father and a spider suit. Way described SP//dr as having three parts: a pilot, a machine, and a sentient spider that acts as half the brain. They chose to make the character female because they were more interested in writing female characters, influenced by their past and their work on *The Umbrella Academy*. They also included Daredevil, reasoning that if they only got to write one Marvel comic, they would put Daredevil in it. The comics were largely inspired by mecha anime, especially *Neon Genesis Evangelion*. As an easter egg, the main characters of *Evangelion*—Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu, and Kaworu Nagisa—appear as Peni’s classmates in her first issue, along with Simon from *Gurren Lagann* and Kei from *Dirty Pair*. Peni and SP//dr first appeared in *Edge of Spider-Verse* #5, released on October 15, 2014. Their story continued in *Edge of Spider-Geddon* #2 by Alberto Albuquerque on August 29, 2018. That same year, Peni appeared in the animated film *Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse*.

Peni's father acted as the original pilot of the SP//dr mecha, protecting New York on Earth-14512. After her father died, Peni was approached by her father's handlers, 'Aunt May' and 'Uncle Ben', who forced her to become the new pilot. They released the sentient spider that controls part of the suit into a room with her to bite and bond with her, a process described as incredibly painful. Five years later, a more solemn 14-year-old Peni battled her universe's version of Mysterio and teamed up with 'D' (her universe's Daredevil) before joining the Spider-Army to fight the Inheritors.
Two years later, a 16-year-old Peni encountered Addy Brock, who piloted a black mech suit called VEN#m powered by a 'sym-engine'. When a kaiju-like creature named M.O.R.B.I.U.S. attacked, VEN#m malfunctioned, became sentient, and consumed Addy and Aunt May. Peni defeated VEN#m but could not save them. At age 17, Peni faced Kraven the Hunter, an old enemy of her father's, with help from Miles Morales. At age 18, she operated her larger SP//dr mecha alongside Takuya Yamashiro and his mech Leopardon.

Created by Gerard Way during a hiatus from My Chemical Romance, the character was designed to explore the concept of the radioactive spider as a psychic link rather than a simple bite.
