Creation
In 1996, Todd McFarlane bought Eclipse Comics' assets at a liquidation sale, thinking that gave him the rights to Miracleman. Neil Gaiman sued, but McFarlane still put out Miracleman merchandise. A new version of Mike Moran, now a reporter for the New York Daily Times, showed up in the Hellspawn comic in February 2001. Artist Ashley Wood teased Miracleman images for a planned appearance in Hellspawn #12, but left after issue #11. Gaiman's 2002 lawsuit killed that storyline. Later, those appearances were explained in-universe as the Man of Miracles, a being whose form changes based on how others see him. The Man of Miracles and the pre-existing Mother of Existence were merged into one character, with a retcon saying they were always the same. That character and its story arcs were later removed from the series, though Spawn #297 confirmed the Man of Miracles still exists. In the King Spawn series, the Man of Miracles was retconned to simply be Gaia.
Fictional character biography
The being known as the Man of Miracles, whose true identity is the Mother of Existence, has guided the Hellspawn to fulfill his role in the coming Armageddon. This entity is ageless and possesses power that surpasses both God and Satan, having orchestrated the major events of the Spawn universe. They hold knowledge about Al Simmons that even the demon Mammon does not, and while their true form is neither male nor female, they can project an illusion of masculinity. It is revealed that this being walked among humanity as Jesus Christ, operating independently of God in that universe. The twelve Disciples, warriors formed from the souls of the Apostles, serve the Man of Miracles rather than God. The Mother gave each of their countless children dominion over a world; God and Satan received Earth. Their constant conflict escalated into war. Humanity, created by God using the Mother’s energy but granted free will by Satan, became unique, and the Mother grew to love them, choosing to intervene on their behalf. They stripped God and Satan of their realms and forced them into slumber in a forgotten part of the universe. The Mother then came to Earth as Jesus, teaching love and tolerance. When humanity corrupted this message, the Mother accepted Armageddon as unavoidable. To give humanity a chance, they preserved every soul that died at the same moment as Al Simmons and placed them within Spawn. Spawn embodies humanity’s potential and must prove that people are worth saving from the feud between God and Satan. The Mother later revived God and Satan as the twin children of Terry and Wanda Fitzgerald, hoping they would learn to appreciate humanity. This plan failed, as the twins grew more unstable and caused further chaos. They have since regained their memories, powers, and kingdoms, and are now gathering armies for the final battle of Armageddon. The Mother is also the Keeper of Greenworld, the voice of the Emerald Parliament, and the one who originally summoned the Heap.
