Fictional character biography
Mammon cuts a striking figure: handsome, polished, and effortlessly charming. This demon is a master of persuasion, known for making tempting offers to humans in exchange for their souls. He operates as a grand schemer, pulling the strings behind most of the challenges that plague Al Simmons, all while pursuing the Throne of Creation so he can reshape the universe according to his own desires.
His origins remain largely unknown, though it has come to light that he once belonged to a group called the Forgotten. These were muses who remained faithful to God but refused to take up arms against their fellow archangels during the War in Heaven. As punishment, they were cast out of Heaven. Unlike the others, however, Mammon was not confined to the Tiend; instead, he appears to have been thrown into Hell. On one occasion, he took on a demonic form and was attacked by Spawn, who left three scars across him with his claws.
Mammon holds a high rank among Hell’s lords. Though Malebolgia was once King of Hell and ruled the 8th Sphere, he was considered insignificant next to Mammon. It is said that Mammon lacks the ability to grant certain powers—only Satan can do that. Thamuz reinforces this distinction, addressing Mammon as Lord but Satan as Master. Eventually, it is revealed that Mammon has been the seemingly all-powerful ruler of the 9th Sphere for 20,000 years, after he killed its previous ruler, Thurifer.
In other media
Mammon was first directly named in the announcement for the video game Spawn: Armageddon, where Andre Sogliuzzo provided his voice. Before that, fans called him Mr. Hell. Outside the main Spawn comics, he has only appeared in one other comic, the French title Spawn: Simony. His first action figure was a Collector's Club Exclusive for Spawn Series 30, planned for fall 2006, and tied to the web-comic The Adventures of Spawn, where he is the main villain. He also received a mention in Mortal Kombat 11.
