Plot

On the Isle of Wight, a crash on the Island Line forces St. James's Hospital to turn away new patients due to overcrowding. Mercy Falls, an older facility set to close, must keep its pediatric patients until beds open elsewhere. Among them is Maggie, a cystic fibrosis patient and orphan, who disturbs night nurse Susan by warning that "she" is approaching. Another child, Simon, awakens with a broken femur and cannot explain how it happened. Susan takes sick leave, and Amy Nicholls, also an orphan, takes over. Amy connects with Maggie, who mentions a girl named Charlotte living in a sealed-off ward upstairs. Operations manager Roy dismisses Charlotte as a long-standing urban legend seen by children over twenty years. Simon later claims Charlotte broke his leg. When Amy visits Susan, she discovers Susan died in an accident. Two psychics tell Amy that Charlotte appears only to people near death. While the children watch Sleeping Beauty, Maggie notes the power of true love's kiss. Amy checks records of other children who reported seeing Charlotte and finds they all died, realizing Maggie is close to death. Roy is killed when Charlotte gives him a severe nosebleed and shoves him backward through a window.
