Plot summary

Cristina Bazán follows Cristina, a student at an intern school in San Juan, Puerto Rico, alongside her frivolous and cruel stepsister, Ambar Alsina. Cristina believes her mother Laura is a widow who travels for business, but Laura is actually a woman accused of prostitution and imprisoned on false charges. While in prison, Laura asks Cristina's father to support their daughter. After graduation, Cristina and Ambar move into Cristina's father's home, where his wife Rosaura—Ambar's mother—and Ambar mistreat Cristina, reducing her to a servant.

Ambar is engaged to the wealthy Rodolfo Alcantara, unaware that Ambar is secretly sleeping with Dr. Miguel Ángel. Rodolfo begins to take an interest in Cristina, who silently loves him. On their wedding night, Rodolfo refuses to consummate the marriage because Ambar is not a virgin. Ambar, pregnant by Miguel Ángel—who has become an alcoholic—devises a plan with Rosaura to make everyone believe Cristina is pregnant by the chauffeur. Cristina is forced to accept and fake a pregnancy.
