The Arktika class is a group of nuclear-powered icebreakers built by Russia, originally the Soviet Union. Designated Project 10520 for the first two vessels and Project 10521 for those that followed, this class held the title of the world’s largest and most powerful icebreakers until the first Project 22220 icebreaker—also named *Arktika*—was launched in 2016. Of the ten civilian nuclear-powered ships ever constructed by Russia or the Soviet Union, six belong to this class, making it the largest single class of such vessels. These ships are tasked with guiding merchant vessels through the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia, and they also support scientific research and tourist trips to the Arctic.

The class’s development began on 3 July 1971, when work started on a conceptual design for a larger nuclear icebreaker at the Baltic Shipyard in what was then Leningrad. The first ship completed sea trials on 17 December 1975. On 17 August 1977, *Arktika* became the first surface vessel to reach the North Pole. As the lead ship of Russia’s second nuclear icebreaker class, *Arktika* gave its name to five subsequent vessels: *Sibir* (1977), *Rossiya* (1985), *Sovetskiy Soyuz* (1989), *Yamal* (1992), and *50 Let Pobedy* (2007). A new class of nuclear icebreakers, Project 22220, saw its first ship—also named *Arktika*—launched in 2016, a move driven by expectations of reduced sea ice due to global warming and rising Arctic traffic.

The *Arktika* class is powered by two OK-900A reactors, each delivering 171 MW. These reactors trace their lineage to the *Lenin*, the first nuclear-powered icebreaker, which had its three OK-150 reactors (90 MW each) replaced with two OK-900 units (159 MW each) between December 1967 and May 1970 at the Zvezdochka yard in Severodvinsk. Each OK-900A reactor sits in a sealed compartment, weighs 160 tonnes, and is shielded by water, steel, and high-density concrete. Radiation is monitored throughout the ship by 86 sensors. Originally fueled with 90% enriched, zirconium-clad uranium, the reactors still in service now use uranium with an average enrichment of 60% (ranging from 20% to 90%), dispersed in an aluminum matrix. Safety rods can fully insert to stop the chain reaction in 0.6 seconds. When breaking ice, *Arktika* consumes approximately 200 grams of uranium fuel per day.
