History

Aberdare Athletic Football Club was formed in 1893, playing its home matches at the Athletic Ground in Aberdare. The club reached the Welsh Cup final three times, finishing as runners-up in 1903–04, 1904–05, and 1922–23. In the 1920–21 season, Aberdare joined the Welsh Section of the Southern League and came second in their debut campaign. This performance earned them a spot in the Football League Third Division South for the following season, alongside Charlton Athletic.

Their first year in league football showed promise, with an 8th-place finish in 1921–22, but financial troubles plagued the club throughout the 1920s. In 1926, Aberdare merged with Aberaman Athletic. Under the merger, the first team kept the name Aberdare Athletic in the Football League, while the reserve side played in the Welsh League as Aberdare & Aberaman Athletic. Despite the merger, the club operated on a tight budget and could not bring in new players. By the 1926–27 season, Aberdare Athletic finished at the bottom of the Third Division South and lost their League place after failing to be re-elected, with Torquay United replacing them.

The loss sparked controversy. In the first vote, Aberdare and Torquay tied at 21 votes each. The deciding ballot was reportedly spoiled, and Aberdare’s secretary claimed one of the scrutineers had a conflict of interest. In the second ballot, Aberdare received 19 votes to Torquay’s 26, while Watford, who finished second-bottom, were comfortably re-elected with 44 votes. The club then fully adopted the name Aberdare & Aberaman Athletic and returned to the Southern League.

That arrangement lasted only one season. In 1928, the Aberaman side split off to reform Aberaman Athletic, and the Aberdare half folded. The combined club was revived in 1945 but split again in 1947. Today, Aberdare Town F.C. continues to play in the Welsh Football League.
