Lore & Background
Konnect Entertainment was established as a one-man agency for Kang Daniel after his legal dispute with his former agency over contract rights. The name 'Konnect' combines 'Korea' and 'connect', reflecting Kang's goal to connect Korea to the world. The company opened a cafe, Cafe de Konnect, in February 2020, and later launched a mobile app for Kang's fancafe in March 2021, the first such app by a Korean artist.
In 2021, Konnect expanded by signing Chancellor and Yuju, and in 2022, dance crew We Dem Boyz officially joined. The agency won the APAN K-pop Label Award in 2022 for leading the Korean wave. However, in May 2024, Kang Daniel filed a criminal complaint against the majority shareholder for forgery, embezzlement, and breach of trust involving billions of won. Subsequently, all artists left, employees departed, and the office was vacated. Kang Daniel announced the company's closure on June 9, 2024.
Reader's Guide
Konnect Entertainment's significance lies in its role as an independent agency founded by a K-pop idol after a high-profile legal battle, demonstrating artist autonomy in the industry. It pioneered fan engagement with a dedicated mobile app and expanded into artist management beyond its founder. The company's rapid growth and sudden collapse due to internal fraud highlight the vulnerabilities of small agencies reliant on a single major shareholder. Its legacy includes the music and performances of its artists, as well as its contributions to K-pop's global reach through partnerships with Sony Music Korea and Warner Music Japan.
