2AM was formed through the Mnet reality show Hot Blooded Men, which documented the rigorous training of pre-debut trainees. The show originally spawned the eleven-member group One Day, from which 2AM and 2PM split. Seulong, Jo Kwon, and Jinwoon appeared on the show; Changmin did not, as he had not yet joined JYP. Jinwoon was initially eliminated but later added to 2AM after another trainee's withdrawal. Formation & Origins

2AM traces its roots to the Mnet reality series Hot Blooded Men, a program that followed the grueling pre-debut training of aspiring idols under JYP Entertainment. The show ultimately produced the eleven-member collective One Day, from which two groups emerged: 2PM, oriented toward choreography-driven pop, and 2AM, carved out as the ballad-focused half. The final four members—Jo Kwon, Lee Chang-min, Lim Seul-ong, and Jeong Jin-woon—were not all present on camera. Chang-min had not yet signed with JYP when filming took place, and Jin-woon was actually eliminated during the competition; he only secured a spot in 2AM after Daehun withdrew from the agency. This unusual patchwork of circumstances gave the group a somewhat accidental chemistry. Japanese & Asian Expansion

In the same month they became the first K-pop idol group to take the stage at Tokyo's Bunkamura Orchard Hall. Momentum continued with 'Denwa ni Denai Kimi ni,' which debuted at fourth on the Oricon Daily chart and included a cover of Ken Hirai's 'Close Your Eyes.' By September 2012 they had released their first fully original Japanese track, 'For You,' which was selected as the theme song for the TBS drama NEO Soumatou Company. That year also brought their first Asia concert tour, spanning Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and Malaysia, during which they recorded a Mandarin-language version of 'I Wonder If You Hurt Like Me.' The tour was not without hardship: member Seul-ong fractured a toe before the Japan leg and performed in a wheelchair. Their 2013 full-length Japanese album Voice collected their singles to date alongside four new songs, cementing their foothold in the Japanese market.

Hiatus, Reunion & Legacy

After their contracts with both JYP and Big Hit lapsed, 2AM entered an indefinite hiatus as each member signed with different agencies and pursued individual projects. The pause stretched far longer than anticipated because most of the group subsequently fulfilled South Korea's mandatory military service obligations, a period that kept them off the public stage for years. When they finally returned, it was after a seven-year gap. Their fourth extended play, Ballad 21 F/W, dropped in 2021 and served as a deliberate reminder of the group's core identity: mature, emotionally direct balladry. The label landscape had also shifted by then. Seulong, Jo Kwon, and Jin-woon had all moved their contracts back to JYP Entertainment once their Big Hit agreements expired, while Chang-min remained with Big Hit due to his ongoing involvement with the project Homme. Their last album under the JYP banner before the split, Let's Talk, featured compositions by producer Park Jin Young and a title track, 'Over The Destiny,' penned by Cho Kyumin.
