Ladybug & Cat Noir: The Movie (soundtrack)

Background

In 2018, Jeremy Zag revealed at Comic Con Experience that the film would be a musical, with him composing the score. Michael Gracey, an Australian filmmaker, came on as executive producer to shape the musical elements. To promote the soundtrack, two showcases were held: one on June 28, 2023, at the Eiffel Tower’s Salon Gustave Eiffel featuring Lou and Elliott as the singing voices, and another at the 2023 Japan Expo on July 14.

Release

The soundtrack for the film dropped on 30 June 2023, put out by Muzeek One with TF1 Musique and distributed through Sony Music Entertainment France. A special limited run came with a 15-centimeter plush toy and a Ladybug mask, and later, signed copies from Lou and Elliott or Jeremy Zag were made available. The first single, "Plus forts ensemble" performed by Lou and Elliott, came out on 9 June 2023, and its music video followed on 21 June. A second track, "Courage en moi" by Lou, arrived on 21 July, with its own video appearing two days later on 23 July.

Reception

Music critic Jonathan Broxton commented that Jeremy Zag handles tonal shifts well, captures the emotional content, and allows the music to build to satisfying heights, especially in action sequences and the finale. Lori C. of Ready Steady Cut felt the music could have been better, finding most songs forgettable and noting that the contrast between voice actors and singers takes away from the story. Tessa Smith of Mama's Geeky called it catchy and entertaining.

Foreign language versions

The English soundtrack for the Ladybug & Cat Noir movie dropped on 28 July 2023, the same day the film hit Netflix in certain regions. It was put out by 22D Music and distributed by Lakeshore Records. This version packs 38 tracks, blending both songs and score into one album, unlike the original French release. For the English cast, Lou returns as Marinette’s singing voice, Drew Ryan Scott voices Cat Noir, Mela Lee is Tikki, and Keith Silverstein takes on Gabriel Agreste.

A promotional single, “If I Believed in Me,” which is the English take on “Si je croyais en moi,” also came out on 28 July 2023 to hype the Netflix release in English-speaking areas. All the songs were composed by Jeremy Zag, with lyrics by Zag, Michael Gracey, Chris Read, and Britt Burton. Other language versions and the score album had already arrived on 5 July 2023 in countries where the film played in theaters.
