Mister Mosquito
A stealth game about a mosquito sucking blood from a family.
Mister Mosquito—known as Mr. Moskeeto in PAL regions and simply *Ka* (Japanese for "mosquito") in Japan—is a stealth game for the PlayStation 2. Developed by Zoom and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, it first launched in Japan in June 2001, with an international release from Fresh Games following in March 2002. The player takes on the role of the title character, a mosquito living in the home of the Yamada family, who serve as his food source. The objective is to gather enough blood over the summer to survive hibernation through autumn and winter. Success requires sneaking up on the humans and drinking their blood without being noticed; if the player is careless, the victim grows stressed and may attack. A re-release for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 arrived via PlayStation Network on September 17, 2024, with an ESRB rating of E10+, down from the original T.
Gameplay centers entirely on extracting blood from the Yamada family as they follow their daily routines. The player can only feed from specific body areas that become available at certain times. Each family member moves in a fixed, repeating pattern, and the player must track these movements to fill a blood quota per stage. The challenge lies in managing each victim's "stress meter": sucking too quickly or too slowly raises their anxiety. If Mister Mosquito is swatted while feeding, he dies instantly. If spotted while flying, the game shifts into Battle Mode, resembling a boss fight. The victim tries to attack, and the player must hit pressure points to calm them down, after which they resume their routine.
The game is structured as a series of stages, each unlocked by completing the previous one. Players choose their own path through a stage. Before each stage, a briefing describes the room, the victim, the available blood-sucking spots, and any environmental hazards. Rooms are fully explorable, with hidden items that grant various benefits.
Development began with an announcement in March 2001, just before the Tokyo Game Show, under the tentative title *Ka: Yamada-ke No Natsu* ("Mosquito: The Summer at Yamada Residence"). Sony published it in Japan on June 21, 2001. Eidos Interactive handled North American and PAL releases on March 13 and 22, 2002, respectively, under its Fresh Games label.

Lore & Background
Mister Mosquito was first announced in March 2001 just prior to the Tokyo Game Show, with the tentative title Ka: Yamada-ke No Natsu (蚊 ~山田家の夏~; lit. "Mosquito: The Summer at Yamada Residence"). The game was published in Japan by Sony on June 21, 2001, and internationally by Eidos Interactive under its "Fresh Games" label on March 13 and 22, 2002, for North America and PAL regions respectively. According to Eidos' Kevin Gill, the company chose to release games like Mister Mosquito because they are often "quirky" or "odd" with "brilliant" gameplay that would otherwise be unlikely to be available outside of Japan.
The gameplay revolves around sucking blood from the Yamada family while they go about their everyday business. The player can only suck from designated body areas available at specific times, and each family member follows a set looping pattern of movements. The challenge involves managing a victim's "stress meter"—sucking too fast or too slow increases stress, and if Mister Mosquito is swatted while sucking blood, instant death occurs. If noticed while flying, Battle Mode begins like a boss battle, where the player must hit pressure points to calm the victim. The game consists of stages unlocked in order, each with a briefing detailing the room, victim, blood-sucking areas, and environmental dangers.
Reader's Guide
Mister Mosquito is notable for its unique premise and stealth gameplay, where players control a mosquito surviving by sucking blood from a human family. According to Famitsu, it was the fifth best-selling game in Japan during its release week at 41,006 copies, with approximately 160,210 copies sold in the country by the end of 2001. Sales in other territories were poorer. The game was re-released on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on September 17, 2024, with a downgraded ESRB rating to E10+ from the original T rating. In 2008, Game Informer named it one of "The Top Ten Weirdest Games of All Time," and G4 included it on its own list of weird games. GamesRadar featured it on lists of games cheaper than therapy and as a cure for entomophobia, as well as on a list of "Rubbish animals that got turned into video game heroes." A sequel, Ka 2: Let's Go Hawaii, was released only in Japan on July 3, 2003, adding new features such as sucking blood from any body part and a relaxation point system. In 2004, Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine named the sequel as one of several Japanese and European games they wanted to see available in North America. Mr. Mosquito also appeared as an unlockable character in Astro Bot.
