Life
Charles Joseph of Austria entered the world on 7 August 1649 in Vienna, the son of Ferdinand III and Maria Leopoldine. A clerical path was chosen for him, and at thirteen he became Bishop of Passau and Olmütz, a role his uncle Leopold Wilhelm had also held, along with the title of Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Whispers circulated that he might wed his niece, Margaret Theresa of Spain, who was already promised to his brother Leopold. If King Charles II of Spain were to die, the pair could have become Spain’s monarchs. Those rumors never materialized, and Margaret’s betrothal to Emperor Leopold stood. Because of his young age, Charles Joseph could not advance to higher clerical orders. He succumbed to illness at fourteen on 27 January 1664 in Linz. His body traveled by ship to Vienna, where it was placed in the Imperial Crypt on 21 February 1664.
